When Watson completed her expedition, many said she was the youngest person to sail solo, nonstop, and unsupported around the world. However, a website called Sail World Website observed that Watson, who was 16 years old at the time, did not sail the requisite distance to meet the circumnavigation’s rigorous criteria.

On the other side, it has been widely claimed that Sail World does not accept sails by minors, which is why Watson’s exploits were never acknowledged.

Watson is nonetheless a national hero and was voted Young Australian of the Year in 2011. She was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2012.
