Is Love & Death Based On A True Story?
Officially, “Love & Death In Silicon Prairie, Part I & II” from the book Evidence of Love: A True Story of Passion and Death in the Suburbs served as the inspiration for HBOMax’s Love & Death.
Journalists Jim Atkinson and John Bloom, both of Dallas, were motivated to write the book after hearing about Candy Montgomery’s life.
The American actress Elizabeth Olsen Plays Candy Montgomery
The American actress Elizabeth Olsen plays Candy Montgomery on the HBOMax series, which centres on her trial for the axe murder of her lover’s wife.
Texas Sheriff Steve Deffibaugh looked into the murder of Betty Gore, who was struck 41 times with an axe on June 13, 1980, in Wylie. Last year, Hulu adapted Candy Montgomery’s story into the mini-series Candy, starring Jessica Biel as Candy Montgomery.

In addition, David E. Kelly, winner of 11 Primetime Emmys, wrote and created the series. Kelly is known for his work on a wide variety of popular and critically acclaimed television dramas, such as Big Little Lies, Boston Legal, Goliath, The Practice, The Undoing, L.A. Law, Ally McBeal, and many others.

What is the Plot of Love & Death?
On November 15, 1949, Candace “Candy” Lynn Montgomery (née Wheeler) was born. She was married to the electrical engineer Pat Montgomery, with whom she had a son and a daughter. In 1977, when her family relocated to Collin County, Texas, she met Betty Gore in church and eventually became her close friend.
Betty Gore, her husband Allan, and their two children resided nearby. Candy and Allan eventually began an illicit affair.
Allan Gore was out of town on June 13, 1980, and unable to reach his wife by telephone. He phoned the neighbours to check on her, and after forcing their way into the home, they discovered Betty killed and her sobbing infant daughter in another room.
The matter was investigated by Steve Deffibaugh from the Collin County Sheriff’s Department. On June 27, two weeks later, Candy Montgomery was arrested and charged with the murder of Betty.
Montgomery was represented by civil law attorney Don Crowder and defence attorney Robert Udashen during the trial.
She pled not guilty and maintained that she defended herself against Gore because he attempted to attack her with the same weapon. The results of the lie detector test suggested that Montgomery was telling the truth.
Tom O’Connell, the district attorney, contended that the victim was struck 41 times with an axe, which is excessive for self-defence.
On October 30, 1980, the Jury declared Candy Montgomery not guilty after only eight days of trial. The verdict was heavily criticized by the local community. Following the trial, Candy moved to Georgia.
Hulu’s original 5-episode mini-series Candy, which is based on these events, aired in May 2022. Jessica Biel portrayed Candy Montgomery, Melanie Lynskey, and Pablo Schreiber, and Justin Timberlake portrayed Betty Gore, Allan Gore, and Deputy Steve Deffibaugh, respectively.
