In his four years at Spring Valley High School, he averaged 31 points, 21 rebounds, and 4 assists per game. This made him a top player. Bob Knight, who was the head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers in 1974, paid for Bird to go to college and play basketball.
He quit school after less than a month because it was too hard for him to shift from his quiet village to Bloomington, where there were a lot of students. Once he was done at Northwood Institute, he went back to French Lick and started at what is now Northwood University.

After that, Bird married Dinah Mattingly in 1989, and the two of them adopted two children. Bird’s early years were hard because his father, Korean War veteran Claude Joseph, died. He had to deal with a lot of mental and financial problems.

The Career of Larry Bird
Bird got a scholarship to play college basketball for Bob Knight’s Indiana Hoosiers in 1974. He quit school less than a month after starting at Indiana University because it was hard for him to get used to the large number of students there after moving from a small town.
He moved back to French Lick and started going to the nearby Northwood Institute, which is now Northwood University. After working for the local government for a year, he started going to Indiana State University in Terre Haute in 1975.
During his three years with the Sycamores, they had a 33-0 record and made their first-ever NCAA tournament trip, where they played Michigan State in the 1979 championship game. Indiana State lost 75–64, even though Bird scored 19 points but only made 7 of 21 shots.
Due in large part to the fight between Bird and the Spartans’ point guard Earvin “Magic” Johnson, a feud that lasted throughout their professional careers, the game was watched by more people than any other college basketball game.
Even though his team didn’t win the championship, Bird earned many awards and honors at the end of the season for his outstanding play, including the Naismith College Player of the Year Award.
