Early Life
Hank Williams Jr. was born on May 26, 1949, in Shreveport, Louisiana as Randall Hank Williams to Audrey and country music legend Hank Williams.
After his father’s passing in 1953, he was raised by his mother. Williams first appeared on stage at the age of eight, singing his father’s songs. He attended John Overton High School in Nashville, Tennessee, as a teen, where he performed at pep rallies and with the choir.
Career
Williams made his first recording in 1964, performing his father’s classic song “Long Gone Lonesome Blues.” In the same year, he provided the singing voice of his father in the biographical musical film “Your Cheatin’ Heart” and sang on the country duet album “Connie Francis and Hank Williams Jr. Sing Great Country Favorites.”
In the 1970s, Williams began pursuing a new musical direction that would set him apart from his father. He began performing alongside numerous Southern rock artists, including Toy Caldwell, Charlie Daniels, and Waylon Jennings.

Ajax Peak Accident
In August 1975, Williams was nearly killed in a climbing accident on Montana’s Ajax Peak, which marked a significant turning point in his life. When the snow collapsed beneath him while he was climbing the mountain on the continental divide west of Jackson, he fell approximately 500 feet.
Williams suffered multiple facial and skull fractures after landing on a hard rock. This incident was later depicted in the 1983 television film “Living Proof: The Hank Williams Jr. Story.” Williams spent two years recovering and underwent a number of reconstructive surgeries after sustaining severe injuries.
