Holland was named president of BYU in 1980, taking over for Dallin H. Oaks. N. Eldon Tanner, the First Counselor in the LDS Church’s First Presidency, liked him as a candidate, and Gordon B. Hinckley, the head of the BYU Board of Trustees executive committee, backed him.
A search group was put together less than two days before Holland was chosen. Even though he was supposed to make a list of candidates for the next BYU president, Holland was told that the First Presidency had chosen him.
There were whispers that his appointment had something to do with politics. Before moving to Provo, Holland cut the number of vice presidents to four and raised the number of assistant and associate vice presidents over academics.
