David Wayne Spade was born on July 22, 1964, in Birmingham, Michigan, to Judith and Warne Spade. His brothers are Andy and Bryan. When Spade was four years old, his family relocated to Scottsdale, Arizona, and his parents divorced shortly thereafter.

The brothers were primarily raised in relative poverty by their mother. David graduated from Saguaro High School prior to enrolling at Scottsdale Community College and Arizona State University. Fraternity member Sigma Alpha Epsilon, graduated in 1986 with a degree in business.
