The remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the India-hosted T20 World Cup are almost certain to be played in the UAE. This year’s IPL will take place between 19 September and 15 October. The T20 World Cup can begin a day later, on October 17. The championship game of this 16-team tournament is scheduled for November 14.
ESPN Cricinfo is the source for this news. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has already written to the International Cricket Council (ICC) requesting that the World Cup be relocated to the UAE.
According to the schedule, the T20 World Cup’s first-round will feature eight teams divided into two groups. This will consist of 12 matches. Four teams (the top two teams in each group) will qualify for the Super-12. Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Ireland, the Netherlands, Scotland, Namibia, Oman, and Papua New Guinea are the eight teams. Both of these groups can host matches in the United Arab Emirates and Oman.
An anticipated third wave of Corona could complicate the IPL and World Cup
The IPL, which began in India as a result of Corona, was also suspended midway through the season on 4 May. There are still 31 matches remaining in this tournament, which can only be held in the UAE between September and October. Due to the suspension of the IPL, it is now more difficult for India to host a World Cup. The Indian board had selected nine venues in India for the T20 World Cup for this ICC tournament, which was to be inspected by the ICC, but the ICC canceled its tour of India in April.
In April and May, India experienced the peak of the second corona wave. The third wave is now expected to arrive at the end of this year as well. In such a situation, hosting the IPL and T20 World Cup in India is extremely difficult.
