In Starz’s historical drama “Outlander,” young Ian plays a crucial role in the lives of James “Jamie” Fraser and Claire Fraser. Ian protects his uncle and aunt no matter what problems or difficulties they encounter.
Since he is always within reach of them, he greatly assists them when Richard Brown tries to separate them. Rollo is Ian’s constant companion if Ian is the couple’s constant companion. Ian is always spotted with the half-wolf dog.
When Ian becomes terrified for his dog’s life in the seventh season, viewers start to worry about what will happen to the animal. Let’s share what we know about the same, then! Warning: This contains spoilers.
Who is Rollo in Outlander?
Initially appearing in the later seasons of the television adaption, Rollo is a prominent figure in the Outlander series. He is a companion of the character Brianna Fraser who is half dog and half wolf.
Rollo, who embodies the untamed energy of the Scottish Highlands, is shown as devoted and protective. His introduction gives Brianna’s story a sense of excitement and camaraderie as she works through the challenges of eighteenth-century living.
The relationship between people and animals is symbolized by Rollo’s character, which highlights themes of survival and devotion. His unusual ancestry—a cross between a wolf and a dog—reflects the untamed nature of the area where the protagonists live.
Throughout the series, Rollo grows to be a cherished part of the Fraser family, providing solace and stability amidst the perils they encounter.
Rollo Died in Novel, Lived in Show
Jamie learns in the seventh season that Mr. Arch Bug is in possession of a portion of the missing Jacobite riches. Young Ian unintentionally kills Mrs. Bug, Arch’s wife, in an attempt to obtain the same. Ian accepts death if Arch wants it since he is consumed by guilt about the death of a woman who has cared for him.
Following Mrs. Bug’s funeral, Ian offers Arch his life in exchange for the latter’s wife’s life, but the elderly man requests Rollo’s life instead. Even though Arch doesn’t murder the dog, his demand must have caused viewers to worry about what would happen to the cherished animal.
Even though Rollo hasn’t passed away in “Outlander,” a catastrophe is still likely to occur before the show’s end.
Unfortunately, Rollo dies in Diana Gabaldon’s “Outlander” novels, which are the show’s original source material. If it’s any comfort, the Fraser family’s beloved member escapes death. He passes away quietly in his sleep, next to Ian, his master.
By then, Ian has married Rachel Hunter, whom he first meets in the seventh season’s fourth episode. In the eighth “Outlander” book, “Written in My Own Heart’s Blood,” Rollo passes away.
However, he sat up this morning, rubbed his hair, and became rigid. Something in his posture immediately startled her, causing her to open her eyes fully. “Ian?” she muttered, but he ignored her. “A Dhia,” he uttered very quietly.
“Oh, a charaid, no.” Immediately, she knew. She should have known as soon as she woke up. With a moaning creak of jaw muscles and a sluggish thump of tail against the wall, Rollo woke up at Ian’s wake and proceeded to push a cold nose into his master’s hand while stretching and yawning.
According to the text, “this morning there was only stillness, and the curled form of what used to be Rollo.”
“Mo chiù,” Ian remarked, lovingly stroking the thick, velvety fur. “Mo chuilean.” He said, “Beannachd leat, a charaid,” with a catch in his voice. The book continues, “Goodbye, old friend.”
In order to prevent himself from dying alone, Ian finds solace in the idea that Rollo avoided death until he met Rachel. Ian assures Rachel that she doesn’t have to go the entire distance when she is getting ready to go with him to bury Rollo. According to Gabaldon’s book, Rachel tells Ian, “I married him, as well as thee.” They lay Rollo down together.
