House of the Dragon Season 2 Release Date: When New information suggests when Season 2 of HBO’s House of the Dragon will premiere.
HBO capitalized on the George R.R. Martin mythos following the success of the Game of Thrones series by green-lighting a prequel series detailing the origins of House Targaryen (the family to which Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys belongs in the main series).
House of the Dragon’s first season was a resounding success, becoming one of the most-watched shows of 2022 and prompting an immediate order for a second season.
Now that Season 2 production is scheduled to begin this spring, audiences are wondering when they can return to Westeros.
House of the Dragon Season 2 Release Date
According to Deadline, the second season of House of the Dragon is set to premiere in the summer of 2024, and production is scheduled to begin next month.
While there has been no official episode order, Deadline reported that the network was initially working on a ten-episode arc for Season 2, but that number has been reduced and scripts have been rewritten to reduce costs.
A spokesperson for HBO told the outlet that Season 2 will now consist of eight episodes, emphasizing that the reduction was “story-driven.”
HBO is currently considering a third season of the Game of Thrones spin-off, while Warner Bros. Discovery seeks to expand author George R. R. Martin’s fantasy universe further.
HBO appears to envision the series lasting three or four seasons. Martin, who is also an executive producer on House of the Dragon, took a step back for Season 2 to help map out the remainder of the series, which is a prequel to his Game of Thrones novel Fire & Blood.
House of the Dragon Season 2
House of the Dragon is based on Martin’s book Fire & Blood and is set more than 170 years before the events of the original fantasy epic.
When House Targaryen sat on the Iron Throne and the seven kingdoms were at “peace,” the series transported viewers back in time. However, the first season’s brilliance sowed the seeds of the Targaryens’ demise, making the “Red Wedding” seem like a minor family setback in comparison.
The conflict between the Targaryen family and House Hightower is one of the most compelling stories ever written for television. Whether it was King Viserys’s final plea to his family to remain united before his death or the dissolution of Rhaenyra and Alicent’s friendship, the House of the Dragon is replete with bloody tragedy.
In addition, the emotionally draining needle drop and impending war at the end of Season 1 have made it more difficult for fans to wait for Season 2.

House of the Dragon Season 2 Cast
The official season 2 cast has not yet been announced, but our best guess is as follows: Olivia Cooke portrayed Alicent Hightower, Emma D’Arcy portrayed Rhaenyra Targaryen, Matt Smith portrayed Daemon Targaryen, Rhys Ifans portrayed Otto Hightower, Eve Best portrayed Rhaenys Targaryen, Steve Toussaint portrayed Corlys Velaryon, Fabien Frankel portrayed Ser Criston Cole, Tom Glynn-Carney portrayed Aegon Tar
Some characters’ chances of returning are uncertain, such as Laenor Velaryon (John Macmillan), who faked his death and exiled himself from Westeros despite being alive.
Could he return to shake things up in the second season? Or must we wait longer (à la Gendry) for his triumphant return? In addition, it is currently unknown whether Mysaria (Sonoya Mizuno) will survive and make it into season 2.
After the mid-season time jump in season 1, Milly Alcock and Emily Carey departed as young Rhaenyra and Alicent, respectively. Despite hopes that they may appear in flashbacks during season 2, showrunner Ryan Condal says it is unlikely they will return. “They are not currently a part of the story we are telling,” he told Variety. That is not something that we are doing at this time.
Paddy Considine made his final appearance as Viserys in episode 8, so he will not return. And (spoiler alert for the season 1 finale), Rhaenyra’s son Lucerys dies at the end of the season, so Elliot Grihault will likely not return.
In season 2, however, several new cast members are anticipated. Condal hinted to Variety that the characters Cregan Stark and Daeron Targaryen will appear, but he remained tight-lipped about who will play them.

Where is Season 2 of House of the Dragon Filmed?
Season 1 was shot in a variety of European locations, including Cornwall, England, Hertfordshire, England, Cáceres, Spain, and the Castle of Monsanto in Portugal. As of October 2022, only Spain has been confirmed as the location for Season 2 filming.
