Career

Magoha began his career in surgery as an intern at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital and advanced to Senior Resident and Clinical Lecturer in Surgery. He also served as a lecturer in the same hospital and as a Consultant Surgeon in several of Lagos, Nigeria’s premier hospitals.

In 1988, he joined the University of Nairobi as a lecturer in Urological Surgery, and by 2000, he had risen through the ranks to become a full professor of surgery.

He held various administrative positions at the university, rising from the chairperson of the Academic Department of Surgery in 1999 to Dean of the School of Medicine, Principal of the College of Health Sciences, Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Administration and Finance, and finally Vice-Chancellor in January 2005, following a competitive recruitment process.

He has authored more than sixty peer-reviewed articles and mentored more than forty Master of Medicine (Surgery) students to completion. He is a member of the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) and the Société Internationale d’Urologie (SIU), among others.

He actively participated in research pertaining to male erectile dysfunction, prostate, testicular, and penile malignancies, circumcision, and HIV/AIDS.

How Did George Magoha Die?

Magoha, who was 71 years old, passed away on January 24, 2023, in the Nairobi Hospital after what is believed to be a heart attack.  He had fallen at home before being transported to the hospital, where failed efforts to revive him ultimately led to his death.

During his stint as Cabinet Secretary at the Ministry of Education, Magoha gained a reputation for being a no-nonsense, tough-talking individual.
