Now that the third season of Demon Slayer has aired, we know more about Tanjirō’s experiences in the Swordsmith Village thanks to the new episodes. In addition, the season has introduced us to a few new characters—those who live in the well-known Swordsmith Village.
One of them is a child named Kotetsu; he attempts to shield the Yoriichi Type Zero doll from Muichiro, but Tanjir eventually trains with it after realizing it has Yoriichi’s katana. In this article, we will reveal Kotetsu’s fate and determine whether he remains alive in Demon Slayer.
Kotetsu escaped his fate. Despite the difficulties Kotetsu had throughout the Swordsmith Village Arc, the little child who aided Tanjirō survived and did not die in Demon Slayer. It goes without saying that he was deceased when the epilogue took place, but this makes sense given that it was written around a century later.
This article’s remaining sections will be devoted to Kotetsu’s story in the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba television series. Since Kotetsu was one of the most intriguing additions to the Demon Slayer mythology, it seems logical that fans would be curious about this young person’s fate, which is why we have written this page.
Be cautious when reading this page because it contains some manga from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba spoilers.
Initially, Kotetsu Helped Tanjirō
We learned about an effective “secret weapon” hidden in the forest near Swordsmith Village in the second episode of the third season of Demon Slayer. Additionally, it is at this point that we first encounter Kotetsu, who is attempting to prevent Mist Hashira Muichiro Tokito from using it.
Refusing to give Muichito the key to the “secret weapon” because he does not want Muichiro to break it, Kotetsu is portrayed as a young boy wearing a swordsmith’s mask.
Later on, the “weapon” is revealed to be a massive war doll that Kotetsu’s ancestors made and maintained in good condition over time. The doll had six arms, each holding a katana, and was really huge.
As only the most proficient Demon Slayers could keep up with it, only they utilized it in their training because it was incredibly powerful—much more powerful than the typical human. However, we won’t be discussing the doll at this time. Kotetsu is what piques our curiosity more.
Naturally, Kotetsu was unable to hold off Muichiro. Despite Tanjirō’s intervention on his behalf, Kotetsu ultimately gave the key to Muichito because Mist Hashira intentionally knocked Tanjirō unconscious so that he could train with Yoriichi Type Zero.

While Kotetsu and Tanjirō watched the training, Kotetsu shared with him the doll’s story and his own self-doubts about his abilities. We also learned that the 10-year-old boy has no family except for an uncle and that his father passed away at a young age, leaving him alone and lacking the necessary skills to carry on his father’s work.
Kotetsu is quite depressed after Muichiro breaks one of the doll’s arms and takes one of its swords, but Tanjirō is able to cheer him up. When they discover the doll is still functional, Kotetsu forces Tanjirō to train with it hard, depriving him of food and water for two days.
The two proceed to where the doll is and give it a try. Kotetsu was a kind but strict instructor who withheld food from Tanjirō until the student succeeded in striking the doll for the first time.
The youthful Demon Slayer continued to improve. There was also a priceless item concealed inside the Yoriichi Type Zero Doll, which he succeeded in shattering when he broke its skull. The owner of this 300-year-old katana was Yoriichi Tsugikuni.
Notwithstanding its rust and unusability, this was a significant prize for Tanjirō, and Kotetsu even expressed regret about it. However, not long after, Hotaru showed up and retrieved the rusty sword, promising to polish it and turn it into a weapon Tanjirō could use without worrying that it might break.
Gyokko’s Attack Nearly Killed Kotetsu, But He Managed to Survive
Kotetsu and Kozo Kanamori stayed in the village for a while, waiting for Hotaru to finish the blade. He shown extraordinary bravery when Gyokko attacked Muichiro and Hotaru. Specifically, Gyokko was going to go after Kotetsu and Kozo when he showed off his macabre human sculpture, but Muichiro moved in front of him to shield the two swordsmiths.
Gyokko then turned his attention to Hotaru after beginning his battle with Muichiro, whom he was able to imprison in his aquatic prison.
In fact, Hotaru was so focused on fixing the blade that he paid little attention to Gyokko and Hantengu’s assault on the settlement. Gyokko was always bugging him. He even fought and seriously hurt him, but Hotaru continued to work on the blade until he was able to give it to Tanjirō, even with his mask broken, his body hurt, and one eye gone.
Additionally, Kotetsu shown bravery by going for Gyokko’s pot to free Muichiro, who was in danger of dying, while Kozo attempted to shield Hotaru. Indeed, Kotetsu’s courage was the reason Muichiro was able to liberate himself.
Despite suffering serious injuries during the battle, Kotetsu said that Tanjirō’s sword hilt saved his life by lessening the intensity of the hits. It was eventually discovered that Kotetsu had escaped the terrifying onslaught and had continued to live in the village while Hantengu and Gyokko were slain by the Demon Slayers.
Although he didn’t truly appear in subsequent parts of the narrative, we do know that he lived. Naturally, he would eventually pass away from old age, but that is quite normal.
