Tragic Death at Grand Canyon Skywalk: Unidentified Man Falls from Viewing Platform

Death at Grand Canyon Skywalk

While touring the Grand Canyon, an unidentified man was strolling across a viewing platform when he suffered fatal injuries and died as a result.

Around nine in the morning on June 5, the guy was reported to have fallen off of the Grand Canyon West Skywalk, as stated by the Mohave County (Arizona) Sheriff’s Office. However, the man’s age has been made public; he was 33 years old when he died. The authorities have not been able to identify the man.

According to a post made on the Facebook page of the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office, two short-haul technicians also known as rope specialists came to the area in the Kingman DPS Ranger helicopter and discovered that the individual had passed away while they were there.

The horseshoe-shaped glass bridge known as the Skywalk extends 70 feet away from the canyon walls and provides visitors with a direct view of the Colorado River 4,000 feet below them.

The body of the deceased guy was located and transported to the Hualapai Nation. The reason for the fall is unknown at this time, and the local authorities have begun an investigation into the occurrence in order to find out more information about it.

What is the Skywalk?

The Skywalk is a cantilevered glass bridge that is formed like the letter U and extends in a direct line from the rim of the Canyon wall.

When Las Vegas businessman David Jin visited the Grand Canyon in 1996, it was during this trip that he had the initial idea for the Skywalk. Jin, in collaboration with Lochsa Engineering, MRJ Architects, and Executive Construction Management, developed and built the Skywalk. The Skywalk first opened in March of 2007, when Buzz Aldrin and Jon Herrington, the first Native American astronaut, led the first people to step onto the Skywalk. Jin was responsible for the design and construction of the Skywalk.

Why is Grand Canyon Skywalk Camera-Free?

On the Skywalk, personal objects such as cameras and telephones are prohibited for the purpose of preventing scratches to the glass paneling; nevertheless, you will have the opportunity to purchase a memento shot from a trained professional photographer. Additionally, you will be forced to wear fabric shoe covers in order to protect the surface from scratching.

What Does “Cantilevered Bridge” Mean?

A cantilevered bridge is a building that sticks out into space horizontally and is only held up on one end. Large cantilevered bridges like the Skywalk are held up by strong, heavy beams and struts made of structural steel or concrete box girders.

How Did They Construct the Skywalk?

On October 6, 2004, following a ceremony at which the Hualapai Indians blessed the construction site, work began on the Skywalk. Drilling didn’t get started for another month, and it took another year and a half before it was finished. Additional four months were needed to weld the steel beams.

On-site construction of the Skywalk was completed. The huge glass panels were hoisted into place using specialized manipulators equipped with big suction cups. These manipulators were used to lift the object into place. The glass panels were rolled into place using the same manner that the ancient Egyptians used to create the pyramids. This took around two and a half years after work first began.
