A hit-and-run accident on Saturday resulted in the death of a former member of the men’s soccer team for the Michigan Wolverines.
An announcement made by the club that Tormenta FC, which plays in the United Soccer League and is based in Statesboro, Georgia, has verified that Carter Payne has passed away. Payne was a defender for the team. Before turning pro, the now 20-year-old athlete spent 2019 and 2020 playing for the University of Michigan.
The South Georgia Tormenta FC organization issued the following statement on Saturday: “South Georgia Tormenta FC is very devastated by the unfortunate demise of Tormenta FC 2 defender David Carter Payne.” Payne was a fantastic athlete, friend, and teammate, and he will be greatly missed by everyone involved with Tormenta FC 2 and the 2022 USL League Two squad that he was a member of.
Payne was riding a Lime scooter at one in the morning on Saturday when he was struck by a vehicle, according to information provided by Statesboro Police to WTOC of Savannah, Georgia. Payne was on his way to the Georgia Southern campus. The driver of the vehicle did not remain at the scene of the accident.
Payne was taken by helicopter to the Memorial Health: Southeast Georgia Hospital, but he could not be saved from his injuries and passed away there.

Carter Payne was hit by a vehicle while he was crossing the street on a Lime electric scooter on Saturday. The driver then sped off after the accident. He was taken by helicopter to a hospital, but he did not survive his stay there.
The Phoenix native spent his debut year playing soccer for Tormenta FC 2, where he participated in eight different matches. According to his bio on the Michigan website, he was a member of the Wolverines roster in 2019 and 2020. Payne was a member of the Barcelona Residency Academy in Casa Grande before he played professionally in the states of Michigan and Georgia. According to MaxPreps.com, he received his diploma from Shadow Mountain High School in Phoenix in 2019 after attending that school.

Donations made in memory of Carter will be accepted by the Ibis Foundation, and these will be given to Carter’s family as well as used to establish a new Carter Payne Scholarship. This scholarship will cover the costs of one TFC Academy player’s team and uniform fees each year, beginning with the 2023 season of the TFC Academy.

His current club released a statement confirming that he had passed away as a result of injuries he received after being struck by a vehicle when he was on an electric scooter. According to the WTOC, the driver of the vehicle fled the scene as Payne was airlifted to a neighbouring hospital to be treated for his injuries. Unfortunately, Payne succumbed to his injuries and passed away.
