Billy Eugene Self Jr. is a basketball coach in the United States. He has been the head coach of the University of Kansas men’s basketball team since 2003. During his 19 years as head coach, he has led the Jayhawks to 16 Big 12 regular season championships. This includes an NCAA record of 14 straight Big 12 regular season championships, some of which were shared (2005–2018).
He has also led the Jayhawks to the NCAA Final Four four times (in 2008, 2012, 2018, and 2022) and to two NCAA titles (in 2008 and 2022). In 2017, Self was put in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. At the end of the 2021–2022 season, Self had the 18th most Division I wins in NCAA history and was the 4th most successful active head coach.

Bill Self was born in OK Mudgee on December 27, 1962. His father taught girls how to play basketball at a high school in the area. Bill went to Oklahoma State University after he graduated from high school. There, he played sports and got a full scholarship.

Career
In 1985, Self joined the University of Kansas coaching staff of Larry Brown. During the 1985–1986 season, he stayed at Kansas and worked as an assistant coach. Self-worked as an assistant coach at Oklahoma State University from 1986 to 1993. First, he worked for Leonard Hamilton, and then for Eddie Sutton. Self’s first job as a head coach was at Oral Roberts University, which hired him in 1993.
In his first year as coach at ORU, the team only won six games. The next year, when ORU won ten games, things got a little better. In Self’s third season, he led the Golden Eagles to an 18–9 record, and in his fourth season, ORU had a 21–7 record and played in its first postseason tournament since the National Invitation Tournament in 1983–1984.
During the 2021–22 season, Self’s Jayhawks won the Big 12 regular season conference title for the 16th time in his 19 years as Kansas’s coach. Self also led his team to win the Big 12 tournament. This was his 9th conference tournament win out of 18. The No. 1 seed in the Midwest Region of the NCAA tournament went to the Jayhawks.

Self-led Kansas to its fourth NCAA National Championship, a 72-69 win over North Carolina on April 4, 2022, in the National Championship game. The Jayhawks beat both a 16-point deficit and a 15-point deficit at halftime to win the NCAA championship. Mike Krzyzewski retired at the end of the season, and by winning the title, Bill Self joined Rick Pitino as the only active coach with two national titles.
